Escrick 10k

Escrick 10k

Two members of HARC took part in the 10K multi-terrain course starting and ending at the Escrick Village Green on Sunday 22nd August. The 10k was a flat and scenic course, running on roads, paths and bridleways within the Escrick Park Estate. Alice Inglis earned a 10k PB, finishing the race in 01:09:57. She said, “I was nervous about my first solo race but I found out that Craig was also taking part and he was a great support to me. Although I ran on my own, it was good to know someone else was there from the club to see me in at the end. I think that learning about the psychology and science of running as part of the intermediate programme really made a huge difference to my mental attitude at this event and contributed to my unexpected PB. Great race and never expected to still be running almost a year after starting the Couch to 5k programme – it’s...

York Chocolate 10k

Members of Hambleton Athletics and Running Club (HARC) took part in the York Chocolate 10k on Sunday. The sell out event was back for a fourth year, with two laps of the Knavesmire, overlooked by Terry's Clock Tower, the grandstands of York Racecourse and Goddard's (once the home of the Terry's of York Family). HARC had a brilliant morning and all runners were rewarded with a goody bag full of chocolates, homemade cakes and a fabulous bespoke Willy Wonka inspired medal. A couple of members achieved personal bests, giving them the opportunity to ring the ‘PB Bell’ and receive a special badge. HARC Chair Ruth Hancock participated in the event and said, “It was fabulous to see the sea of HARC blue around the course and so helpful to have a support crew cheering us on! Congratulations to everyone who took part; although flat, it was a challenging course due to the ever-changing weather and terrain. Great atmosphere, goody bag and medal...

Phill said, “The atmosphere on the day was really friendly and lots of runners were supporting each other during the race. The crowd along the route made lots of noise to help keep motivation high.” Both our runners completed the 10k run in very impressive times – Phill crossed the line in 53:54, with Charlie close behind in 55:25. A huge well done to both runners!...

Your first Parkrun? We’ve got you :)

Parkrun has become an institution for runners (and walkers) of all abilities. And if you're soon going to be attending your first one, then we think there are some things you should probably know. Parkrun is an international network of volunteer groups who organize weekly timed events. These usually consist of a 5k course at 9am on Saturday mornings, and a 2k "Junior Parkrun", typically on Sundays at 9am. These events are "free, for everyone, and forever" as Parkrun proclaim. And they are great fun and have a fantastic atmosphere. All sorts take part, from super-speedy athletes to people who walk the course. They are timed, but it is not a "race". Here's your checklist for taking part in your first Parkrun: In the days before your first Parkrun: Register with Parkrun by visiting https://www.parkrun.org.uk/register/ - this will give you your unique Parkrun number. Make sure you choose "Hambleton Athletics and Running Club" as your group! Get your barcode - if you didn't print out your...

This was part of the 2021 Threshold Trail Series, which offers a number of races for experienced entrants. Nick’s choice was the 100 km course along the Ridgeway, Britain’s oldest path, that navigates Wayland’s Smithy, the famous Uffington White Horse, and Barbury Castle, before finally reaching the iconic Avebury Stone Circle. The route follows in the footsteps of travellers from more than 5,000 years ago and takes in some incredible scenery, including views of Bronze Age hill forts, Neolithic burial chambers, and Roman river crossings. Nick completed the 62 mile course in an impressive time of 14:43:32, placing him 452nd out of 1,281 finishers. Kiplin Hall & Gardens 10k Trail race

On Wednesday 9th June, members of Hambleton Athletics and Running Club attended the Kiplin Hall & Gardens 10k Trail Event organised by local group MAD Races. This event, which was run in a Covid secure manner, was another welcome return to the race experience for the athletes. The course was laid out over two 5k laps taking in the formal gardens, grassland and lakeside views set within the estate of the beautiful Jacobean historic house. The sunshine highlighted the splendour of the setting but the heat and humidity made it a tough run for the participants. Kay Kelly came 5th in her category with a time of 55:15. Sara Sherwood and Anna Bonner, competing in only their second ever trail race, crossed the line in 1:13:43. Although not running, Alasdair McWilliam made his contribution to the event by marshalling. Another HARC member, Michael Bonner, kindly took photographs and cheered the runners on at checkpoints and at the finish line. Anna said “This was a...

Lakeland Trails Coniston Marathon Event Weekend

HARC Runners at Lakeland Trails Coniston Marathon Event Weekend Lakeland Trails hosted their annual ‘Marathon Event’ in Coniston on Sunday 6th June. Three runners from Hambleton Athletics and Running Club took part. The marathon and half marathon courses wound their way through the foothills below Coniston Old Man, before taking in a lap of the extraordinarily beautiful Tarn Hows. The half-marathoners then headed back down to the village while the marathon runners ran all the way around Lake Coniston. Alasdair McWilliam took on the full marathon – 26.2 miles of challenging hills and terrain – a fantastic achievement, especially in the scorching heat. Gemma Birtles faced her first ever half marathon with support from Head Coach, Chris Lees. They finished the course despite a comic book head injury and celebrated with a paddle in Lake Coniston after crossing the line. Alasdair and Gemma are both qualified run leaders and have recently assisted the rest of the coaching team in delivering a Couch to 5k...

Swainby Sweep Trail Race

Swainby Sweep Trail Race

Members of our club attended the Swainby Sweep Trail Race on Sunday. After months of cancelled events, it was fantastic for athletes to experience the return to a race atmosphere. Eight runners, including some of our Stokesley based members, braved the snow and wind to tackle the challenging trail event, taking in views of the Yorkshire Moors and across to the Dales. Sunshine prevailed, despite the early snowfall that led to the rerouting of the 16 mile race. Runners who had entered that distance were instead asked to complete two laps of the seven mile course – two miles shorter, yes, but with the added psychological hurdle of passing the finish line to continue for a second lap! In the seven mile race, Head Coach Chris Lees came 6th in his category (25th overall) with a time of 58:23, and Kay Kelly crossed the finish line in 1:13:16 to take 7th in her group. Anna Bonner (1:31:57) and Sara Sherwood (1:31:58) completed...
