Even though we work hard to keep the costs of being part of the HARC family to a minimum, we understand that sometimes the choices about where the money goes seem impossibly difficult.
Whilst we do what we can to minimize the costs, make available second hand kit, and raise money through other sources, we are delighted to announce that we can sometimes also offer support to potential junior members thanks to the generosity of our benefactor in memory of Mike Oliver.
Mike enjoyed sport but, due to illness, was unable to participate. He saw the benefits through his daughter’s involvement in a local sports club – gaining friendships, support, and being part of a team. She learnt many skills along the way, including perseverance in the face of the challenges sport brings.
In the words of Mike’s family: “from our family to yours, understanding when times are hard, there is support.”
Who can apply for a scholarship?
The scholarship is available to support children or young people who are at least 12 years old and under 18, and whose parents or carers are facing financial hardship making participation in our club unaffordable. It is not based on current or potential athletic performance.
When deciding who the scholarship fund will be used to support, priority will be given to juniors:
- who have an interest in sport (e.g. school sports)
- that are not members of any other fee-based sports clubs
What does it cover?
The scholarship has some flexibility, but will typically cover:
- Club and England Athletics membership (usual cost £70)
- Competition vest or t-shirt (usual cost £25 – £27)
- Competition entry fees (usually £6 – £18 per event)
All scholarships are entirely discretionary, and may not include all of the items above. Each scholarship will apply for a maximum of one year, but a new application can be made for the next year.
How to apply?
If you would like to find out more about our scholarship programme, or would like to apply, please either call our Head Coach, Chris Lees, on 07773 770737, or email scholarship@harc.uk.
It is best to apply in February or March for the coming athletics and running year (1st April to 31st March). However, applications will be considered at any time of year subject to the availability of funds.
Once an application is received, it will be considered by our scholarship committee.
